Carpe diem...
‘Carpe diem simul’ means
strive through the day together….
WOW. Finally I am making a blog of my own. Yep. Even I can’t
believe it. Few days ago, I watched a movie ‘Dead poet’s society.’ It’s from this wonderful film I came forward
the Latin aphorism “carpe diem” which means ‘strive through the day’. The film’s
plot is that of 1956 of Welton Academy, an all-boys elite prep school. In the 1989
motion pictures, the English teacher John Keating, played by Robin Williams,
famously says: "Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives
extraordinary." Later, this line was voted as the 95th greatest movie
quote by the American Film Institute. I got the recommendation for the film and
I too highly recommend it.
Well, I googled the aphorism ‘carpe diem’ and found that it
is taken from the book 1 of the Roman poet Horace's work Odes (23 BC). The
complete English translation text goes this way:
Ask not ('tis forbidden
knowledge), what our destined term of years,
Mine and yours; nor
scan the tables of your Babylonish seers.
Better far to bear the
future, my Leuconoe, like the past,
Whether Jove has many
winters yet to give, or this our last;
This, that makes the
Tyrrhene billows spend their strength against the shore.
Strain your wine and
prove your wisdom; life is short; should hope be more?
In the moment of our
talking, envious time has ebb'd away.
Seize the present; trust tomorrow e'en as little as
you may.
The last sentence originally: ‘carpe diem, quam minimum
credula postero’ which says "Seize the day, put very little trust in
tomorrow (the future)". The ode says that the future is unforeseen and
that one should not leave to chance future happenings, but rather one should do
all one can today to make one's future better.
Though the literary piece is eons old, its words still are as
true as true can be. In our todays swift and fierce world, procrastination is
the last thing one is expected to do. So, lets allow the beauty and meaning of
this age old text sink into our mind, lets enjoy as well as give every day our
fullest, lets plan the best for the future and BELIEVE- most importantly believe that we can reach our destined
future and conquer our dreams….
